Storm Damage Roof Repair: The First 48 Hours

The wind dies down, the rain stops, and you walk outside to find shingles in the yard. Now what? The hours right after a storm decide a lot. Move fast and document well, and storm damage roof repair tends to go smoothly, with the insurance claim covering most of the cost. Wait too long, and a wet attic turns into a stained ceiling, then mold, then a much bigger bill.

This is a practical, step-by-step guide for homeowners across Gainesville FL, Monroe GA, and Raleigh NC. The JKey team built it around the first 48 hours, because that window matters more than most people realize. You will learn how to stay safe, how to spot damage from the ground, when to call a roofer, and how to file a storm damage roof insurance claim that actually gets paid.

If you already know your roof took a hit, you can contact JKey for a free inspection and skip the guesswork. For everyone else, start here.

The First 48 Hours: An Hour-by-Hour Game Plan

Speed protects two things at once. It protects your home from secondary water damage, and it protects your insurance claim from getting picked apart later. Here is the order of operations.

1. Stay off the roof. A wet, debris-covered roof with hidden structural weakness is dangerous. Inspect from the ground or, at most, from inside the attic. Leave the climbing to a pro.
2. Check for active leaks inside. Look at ceilings, attic decking, and the tops of walls. Put a bucket under any drip and move furniture and electronics out of the way.
3. Cover what you can, safely. If water is getting in and a section is exposed, a tarp can slow the damage. Only do this if you can stay safely on the ground or use proper roof access. When in doubt, call for emergency tarping instead.
4. Document everything before you touch it. Photos and video first. Then cleanup. Insurers want to see the damage in its original state.
5. Save your receipts. Tarps, plywood, a hotel night if the home is unsafe, any temporary fix. Many policies reimburse reasonable emergency measures.
6. Call your insurer to open the claim. Do this early, even if you do not yet know the full extent. Opening the claim starts the clock in your favor.
7. Schedule a professional storm damage roof inspection. A roofer sees what an untrained eye misses, and a written report strengthens your file.

Do those seven things and you have handled the part that homeowners most often get wrong. Everything after this is about getting the repair done right and the claim paid fairly.

How to Spot Storm Damage From the Ground

You do not need to climb up to learn a lot. Most early warning signs are visible from the yard, the driveway, or a second-story window. Grab your phone and look for these.

• Missing, cracked, or curling shingles. Bare patches and shingles flipped up at the edges are the clearest signs of wind damage.
• Granule loss. Asphalt shingles shed their protective granules when they take a beating. Check gutters and downspout splash zones for piles of what looks like coarse black sand.
• Dented or knocked-loose flashing. The metal around chimneys, vents, and valleys is a common failure point after hail and wind.
• Dings on gutters, vents, and the AC unit. Hail that dents soft metal almost certainly bruised the roof too. Hail storm roof damage often shows up on these surfaces first.
• Debris in the gutters. Branches, leaves, and shingle pieces collecting in gutters point to impact above.
• Sagging or uneven roof lines. A dip in the deck can mean trapped water or structural damage underneath.

A note on the calmer cousin of wind damage: small hail. It can dent and bruise a roof in ways that are tough to see from below and easy for an adjuster to overlook. That is exactly why a documented inspection matters. If you suspect a problem you cannot confirm, that is the moment to bring in a trained set of eyes for a residential roof inspection.

When to Call a Roofer, and When It Can Wait

Not every storm means an emergency. But some situations should not sit overnight.

Call right away if:

• Water is actively coming inside.
• A large section of shingles or decking is gone or exposed.
• A tree, limb, or heavy debris hit the roof.
• You see daylight in the attic or feel the deck flex underfoot.

It can usually wait a day or two if:

• You see a few missing shingles but no interior leaks.
• The damage looks cosmetic and the forecast is dry.
• You need time to document before a roofer arrives.

When the situation is urgent, faster is cheaper. A small opening left exposed during the next rain can turn a minor fix into a major one. JKey handles emergency and storm damage roof repair across all three markets, and the team would rather tarp a roof tonight than rebuild a ceiling next month.

How a Storm Damage Roof Insurance Claim Works

Most standard homeowners policies cover sudden, accidental damage from a covered peril, which usually includes wind and hail. What they generally do not cover is wear and tear, age, or damage tied to deferred maintenance. That distinction is the heart of almost every claim dispute, so documentation is your best friend.

Here is the typical path from storm to settlement.

1. Review your policy. Find your deductible, your coverage limits, and any separate wind or hail deductible. Coastal and storm-prone areas often carry these.
2. File promptly. Insurers set deadlines for storm claims, and those windows vary by carrier and state. Filing early, while the storm date and damage are fresh, keeps your claim credible.
3. Submit your documentation. Photos, video, the date and time of the storm, and a roofer’s written inspection report.
4. Meet the adjuster. The insurance company sends an adjuster to assess the damage. Be present so you can point out everything, including the subtle spots.
5. Get a contractor estimate. A written estimate from a licensed roofer gives you a number to compare against the insurer’s offer.
6. Review the settlement. If the offer falls short of the documented damage, you can present your evidence and ask for a re-evaluation.

A quick word on the people knocking on doors after a storm. In storm-belt neighborhoods, out-of-town crews and “free inspection” pitches show up fast, and not all of them are legitimate. Verify licensing and insurance before signing anything, and be wary of anyone pushing you to sign over your claim. A locally owned, licensed contractor with a real address is the safer call.

What an Adjuster Looks For vs. What a Roofer Looks For

These two roles overlap, but their jobs are not the same, and knowing the difference helps you.

An insurance adjuster works for the insurer. Their job is to confirm the damage is real, tie it to a covered peril, separate storm damage from pre-existing wear, and price the repair against your policy. They tend to focus on what is clearly visible and clearly attributable to the event.

A roofer works on the roof every day. A good one finds damage an adjuster might miss, such as bruised shingles from small hail, lifted but not missing shingles, compromised underlayment, loosened fasteners, and weak spots in the decking. That detail often surfaces issues that belong in the claim but would otherwise go undocumented.

This is why having a roofer inspect before or during the adjuster’s visit pays off. The written report and estimate become part of the record, and the two professionals can compare notes on site. The JKey team regularly walks roofs alongside the documentation a homeowner needs for a fair claim.

Why Timing Matters More Than You Think

Two clocks start ticking the moment a storm passes.

The first is your insurance window. File too late and the carrier can question whether the damage came from the storm at all, especially if more weather rolls through in the meantime. The second clock is physical. Water that gets past a damaged roof does not sit still. It soaks into decking and insulation, runs down to ceilings and wall tops, and in warm, humid conditions, mold can begin growing within about 48 hours. A roof problem quietly becomes a ceiling problem, then an indoor-air problem.

That cascade is the real reason the first 48 hours matter. Catching a roof leak early often means a targeted repair. Catching it late can mean roof work plus interior water damage restoration. One is a manageable fix. The other is a project.
