Gutters are foundation protection

Gutters get treated as trim. They are drainage, and the thing they are protecting is not the roof but the foundation. A roof sheds an enormous volume of water in a Georgia or Florida downpour, and where that water lands decides whether the soil around a house stays stable or whether it moves.

Most gutter problems are not gutter problems. They are sizing, slope or discharge problems, and they are worth understanding before replacing a run that was never going to keep up in the first place.

What it protects The foundation

Roof runoff moved far enough from the house to stop soil movement.

Common failure Discharge

A downspout that ends at the wall relocates the problem, it does not fix it.

Also handled Fascia

Rotted fascia and soffit are usually a gutter or an eave detail, not a roof.

Overflowing gutters are usually undersized, not clogged

Cleaning is the first thing everyone tries, and sometimes it works. When a gutter overflows in heavy rain but is visibly clear, the problem is capacity: either the trough is too small for the roof area feeding it, or there are not enough downspouts along the run.

The inputs are roof area, pitch and rainfall intensity. A steeper roof delivers water to the gutter faster than a shallow one of the same size, and the southeast produces short, intense storms that stress a system far more than a long soft rain does. A gutter sized for average rainfall will overflow several times a year, and the overflow lands exactly where you least want it, at the base of the wall.

Adding a downspout is often a more effective fix than replacing the trough, and it is a much smaller job. That is worth checking before anyone quotes a full replacement.

Where the water goes matters more than the gutter

A gutter that collects perfectly and then discharges at the base of the wall has moved the problem about four feet. That is the most common defect on otherwise sound systems, and it is the one that eventually shows up as a damp crawlspace, a cracked slab edge or a settlement crack in drywall.

The discharge point wants to be far enough from the structure that the water leaves rather than soaks in, and it wants to run to somewhere lower than where it started. On a flat lot that can mean extending the downspout or running it underground to daylight. On a sloped lot it can be as simple as turning it the right way.

This is also where gutters intersect with the roof. Rotted fascia is almost always a gutter or eave detail rather than a roof covering failure, so a fascia repair without addressing the water that caused it is a repair with a return date.

How the work happens

5 stages
01 Measure Roof area and pitch feeding each run, which is what decides trough size and how many downspouts the run actually needs.
02 Check slope A gutter has to fall toward its outlet. Runs that hold water after rain are usually pitched wrong or sagging between hangers.
03 Follow discharge Where each downspout ends, and whether the ground there takes the water away from the house or back toward it.
04 Inspect fascia The board the gutter hangs on. Soft or rotted fascia has to be dealt with before new gutter is hung on it.
05 Install Hangers at the spacing the run needs, outlets sized to the load, and the eave detail closed so wind-driven rain cannot track behind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my gutters overflow even when they are clean?

Almost always capacity. Either the trough is too small for the roof area draining into it, or the run has too few downspouts, so water reaches the end faster than the outlet can take it away. Steep roofs make this worse because they deliver water quickly. Adding a downspout is often the fix, and it is a much smaller job than replacing the gutter.

How far from the house should a downspout discharge?

Far enough that the water leaves rather than soaks into the soil against the foundation, and onto ground that falls away from the house. A downspout ending at the wall is the most common defect on an otherwise sound gutter system, and it is the one that shows up years later as a damp crawlspace or a settlement crack.

Are gutter guards worth it?

They reduce how often a gutter needs clearing, which matters under pines and oaks. They do not increase capacity, so they will not fix an overflow caused by undersizing, and some designs shed water past the gutter entirely in very heavy rain. Treat them as a maintenance convenience rather than a performance upgrade.

My fascia is rotting. Is that a roof problem?

Usually it is a gutter or eave detail problem. Water tracking behind the gutter, an overflowing run, or an eave without a proper drip edge will rot fascia and soffit while the roof covering above is perfectly sound. Replacing the board without correcting the water path means doing it again.
